Bordered by two lakes, Wisconsin is an outdoor enthusiast's dream with more than 15,000 lakes. The countryside ranges from sandstone cliffs to sandy beaches to large stands of forests. This state is famous for the hospitality of its 5.5 million residents and for its Milwaukee beer, brewed in the largest city in the state - Milwaukee.
The history of Wisconsin dates back to the late 1600's when there was a French fur-trading post and Roman Catholic mission near the present day town of Ashland. Ownership of the state went back and forth between the Americans and British until it was finally made part of the United States following the War of 1812. Farming is an important economic activity as is automobile production and the state ranks second in paper production in the country.
In Milwaukee, there are more than 1500 bars and taverns where you can taste the fine brews. This city also boasts many historic homes and buildings, parks and museums. Summerfest, held in June, is only one of the lavish festivals that take place in this city. Madison is the capital of the state and visitors find it to be a city that exudes charm and grace and the impressive frescoes on the ceiling of the State Capitol are worth seeing. Nearby in Baraboo, the home of the Ringling Brothers Circus, you can visit the World Circus Museum.
Along the coastline of Lake Superior there are many picturesque villages and lighthouses as well as miles of sandy beaches. In fact, this area has the most lighthouses in the country. You can visit the 21 Apostles Islands in Lake Superior and at night you can see the lights of Canadian cities across the lake. This area is popular with naturalists because of the many animals that roam wild and free in the forests and it is one of the best places for birdwatchers to see bald eagles.
