Richmond, Virginia is an important United States city with a history dating back more than four hundred years. Virginia was founded as a small English settlement in the early 1600s, and is named after the city of Richmond, England. Today Richmond, also the capital of Virginia, is home to over one million in its metropolitan area. Richmond still maintains its significance as a historical city, as well as being a major center for business, government, and tourism. The Richmond area draws more than five million visitors every year for its unique historic culture and modern attractions.

Due to its long-standing American history, Richmond has a wealth of related attractions and sites to visit. One of the most interesting is the Virginia State Capitol Building, which was built in 1788. The Monument Avenue Historic District memorializes many figures from the Civil War. The Museum District houses the Valentine Richmond History Center and the Virginia Historical Society, which presents award-winning exhibitions, reenactments, and educational programs. Three local venues, the Landmark Theatre, Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts, and the Byrd Theatre, are examples of Virginia architecture constructed in the 1920s.

Richmond has a strong arts and culture community. The Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Edgar Allan Poe Museum, and Science Museum of Virginia are interesting places to see. Richmond is located on the banks of the James River in central Virginia. Several parks run along the riverside, such as James River Park and Forest Hill Park. The James River also contains two islands: Belle Isle and Brown’s Island, where parks and other recreation can be found. Byrd Park is located on two hundred acres north of the James River, with trails, lakes, and an amphitheatre. Richmond is centrally located in Virginia at the intersection of Interstate 95 and Interstate 64. Richmond is also within driving distance of attractions including Kings Dominion, Diggerland, and Busch Gardens Amusement Park, the historical city of Colonial Williamsburg, and Washington, D.C.
