In close proximity to Corpus Christ, Texas, Portland was called the Gem City of the Gulf Coast.  It has been described as being the most pleasant and attractive spot in all of Texas.  Portland is situated on two bays and is home to safe and secure neighborhoods.  It is a city of more than ten square miles and has a population of around 17,000 people.  You can access the city of Portland in Texas by either U.S Highway 181 or Texas Highway 35. 

Residents of Portland, Texas can enjoy quiet family living with an excellent school system.  Being so close to Corpus Christi allows residents and visitors of Portland the ability to use busier shopping and entertainment districts.  Because the city is located on both the Nueces and Corpus Christi Bays, residents and visitors to the area can partake in many water bound activities. 

Boating, sailing, kite surfing, birding, and fishing are all activities that you can be a part of in Portland.  You can golf at the North Shore Country Club which boasts an 18-hole waterfront course. The city of Portland is also home to the Indian Point Fishing Pier and Park, as well as Sunset Lake.  Indian Point Park has approximately 55 acres of wetlands that allow guests to picnic, study the area and land, and also do a little wade fishing. 

If you'd prefer to stay indoors, you can go to the City of Portland Community Center Complex and walk or jog on the indoor track, play a game of basketball or racquetball, and even take classes in ballet, karate, tap dancing, or yoga.  The Complex also has classrooms, which can be used for educational purposes and a large meeting hall which has been used for Arts and Crafts fairs and parties.  With so much to do in Portland, it's a wonder that anyone ever leaves.
