The site of many battles during the Civil War, Franklin, Tennessee, has a lot of history behind it. It was originally named for Benjamin Franklin and in the mid-1800s, it was one of the wealthiest counties in Tennessee as the center of the plantation economy. Today, Franklin portrays a unique blend of history and modern technology with the quaintness of a small town combined with the sophistication of a large city.
A tour of the historic homes has to include a stop at the Carnton Plantation, the hospital used during one of the worst battles in the Civil War. There is also a cemetery on this site. The Carter House still has the bullet holes in the walls from the 1864 Battle of Franklin and the tiny McPhail House was once the home of Dr Daniel McPhail and the Union headquarters. See a spectacular view of Franklin from Fort Granger, a fort built by Union troops. The Franklin War Museum contains an outstanding collection of Civil War artifact's as well as Indian war artifact's.
Take in some of the first run Hollywood movies at the Thoroughbred 20 or enjoy a Broadway style musical at the Boiler Room Theater. Recreational activities are not forgotten in Franklin. With four golf courses to choose from, the golf enthusiast in your group will be thrilled. The Williamson Recreation Complex has something for everyone with two swimming pools, an indoor walking track, racquetball, tennis and volleyball courts and a weight room.
There are three main shopping areas to choose from: Cool Springs Galleria, with over 165 stores, The Factory at Franklin, a network of small boutiques, antique and craft stores, and the Historic Downtown District, where you can stroll the streets to shop at more than 50 stores, including art galleries.
