Athens is located about one hour's drive from Knoxville, TN. The city has plenty of activities for both young and old, tourists and residents. The agricultural heritage of the city is evident in the many farms in the area. You can visit the Mayfield Dairy Farms Visitor Center or if you are in the area you can attend the McMinn County Dairy Festival. Athens, boasts four 18-hole golf courses, but if you prefer water sports the recreation area at Watts Bar Lake will provide you with many opportunities for sailing, fishing and water skiing. You can even go river rafting on the beautiful Ocoee River. Fishermen will delight in fishing on the Tellico River, one of the most scenic trout fishing streams in the country.
There are many hiking and camping areas at Bald River Falls or in the Cherokee National Park. Nearby you will find the Lost Sea, which is entered in the Guinness Book of records as the world's largest underground lake.
