The Black Hills Gold Rush of the late nineteenth century brought people to the area and subsequently the town received its name, which came about as a consequence of the many dead trees that lined one of the canyons where gold was uncovered.

The performing arts are also emphasized in Deadwood, as quite often historic events are reenacted in the breathtaking Black Hills where many other special community events also take place.
One of the most prominent and exciting features of the city is, however, its gaming, which actually dates back to the days of the Gold Rush. With a huge selection of games to choose from one can easily find something to satisfy a gambling craving.
There are also quite a few trails to explore in the area. Roughly 300 miles of snowmobiling trails and the impressive 110-mile Mickelson Bike trail are sure to provide a fun, engaging outdoor experience. Of course there is always the option to simply hike through the fantastic Black Hills.
