Just off Interstate 80 in Verango County, Pennsylvania, you will find the town of Franklin amid the rolling hills and miles of forest. This area is a pure delight for any tourist who likes outdoor recreational activities. Franklin has often been called the Victorian City because of the many stately homes you will find in the heart of the town.
Two Mile Country Park, the largest park in Western Pennsylvania, has facilities for all kinds of outdoor activities, such as picnicking, camping, fishing, swimming and golfing in the summer and snow sports in the winter. There are two golf courses to choose from - the Spears Public Golf Course, with narrow tree-lined fairways and 3 ponds, and the Sleepy Hollow Golf Course with its sand traps.
The Debence Antique Music World has been named as one of the top ten attractions in the state and has an extraordinary collection of over 100 exhibits of automated music machines dating back to the 1890s. Concerts in the park are very common in Franklin and you will hear the enchanting sounds of the Franklin Silver Cornet Band, one of the oldest volunteer bands in the country. The Applefest Festival is the largest festival in the country, with over 300 craft and food vendors, and is held over three days in October.
Special events and parades take place at various times of the year, such as the Halloween Bash in October, the Taste of Franklin, an annual August event, where you can taste the cuisine of the various restaurants in the town and the Light Up Night in December.
Shop at the Cranberry Mall with 4 department stores and over 40 specialty stores or browse the many small antique stores scattered throughout the town. Restaurants abound where you can sample the local cuisine. Taste the Celtic Chili or the Battered Buffalo Bits at the Celtic Café, experience Italian dining at Primo Barone's Restaurant and Brewery. There are many small taverns where you can enjoy a cold beer and chat with the locals or mix with writers, artists and musicians at the Bridge Coffee House.
When your day is done, you will find the accommodations are just as appealing as everything else that Franklin has to offer.
