The origins of this town date back to 1830 when beaver trappers established a camp here on the banks of the river. The name comes from the chief of the Piute Indian tribe that were native to this region.

If you are feeling lucky and want to take your chances at the tables, there are three casinos in this town. Winner's Hotel and Casino is the only full service casino, but you can dance with Lady Luck at the Red Lion Hotel and Casino or the Model T.

Visit the Buckaroo Hall of Fame to see memorabilia of the town's early history. Here you will find paintings, traditional working gear, drawings and sculptures. Take some time to take an expedition into the Black Rock Desert High Canyon where the famous Emigrant Trail took the pioneers to their new homes in the west. The trail and the scenery are pretty much the same today as they were 150 years ago, so you can pretend that you are one of these pioneers heading for a new life.

There are many different events that take place in Winnemucca at various times during the year. Enjoy the rodeo, the shooting of the West or a horse show. With the many nature trails around the city, you won't have any problems being able to get close to nature.
