Silver City, New Mexico, is the largest town in Grant County and has a history going back over 150 years. It has an altitude of just under 6000 feet and snow is common in the winter. The temperatures can get as high as 100º in summer and get down below freezing during the nights in the winter. There are many forms of wildlife in the area and on the outskirts of Silver City, you may be able to see bears.
Every Saturday in the spring and summer, the historic downtown area is the site of the Farmers' Market. The downtown is also home to many historic homes and buildings, such as the Silver City Museum. This is the site of perfectly preserved buildings dating back to the early settlers and a life-sized monument dedicated to the Buffalo Soldiers once stationed here. During the summer, you can witness a live re-enactment of fort life as it was in the 1800's.
Enjoy the unique beauty of the Gila National Forest and the rich history it provides of the Apache and Mogolan Indians, the prospectors and the Spanish and Mexican ranchers. The Trail of the Mountain Spirits starts in Silver City and winds its way through the Gila Forest. This makes for a spectacular driving tour.
