Located on the north side of Platte River, Scottsbluff, Nebraska is only 20 miles from the Wyoming border. The US Highway 26 and State Highways 71 and 29 serve this town, so you won't have any difficulty driving here. Although a fur trader, Hiram Scott, for whom the town is named, originally settled the town, it was the railway that brought the settlers to this area.
When you come to Scottsbluff, you can choose to stay in a bed and breakfast, one of the hotels or camp in one of the campgrounds. With restaurants and bistros, you won't have any problem finding a place to dine as you go from one attraction to the other. Visit Rebecca Winter's Grave, where the markers detail the hardships suffered by those pioneers who traveled the Mormon Trail to the West. Learn about the local Mexican culture at the Western Nebraska Mexican American Historics. Here you will see Aztec and Mayan artifacts, clothing and toys, brought here by the first Mexican immigrants. Riverside Zoo is the largest in the state and has a mixture of exotic and regional animals.
Scotts Bluff used to be a prominent landmark for the pioneers traveling along the Oregon Trail. Today it is a national monument dedicated to those strong and brave people that opened the west. At the museum, you can learn about their stories as well as the natural wonders of the area. You can also see the beautiful collection of watercolor paintings by William Henry Jackson. Step back in time when you take in the sights at the North Platte Valley Museum and learn the story of the Pony Express. Visit nearby Chimney Rock National Historic Site.
