Known as the City of the Arts, the city of Winston Salem in North Carolina preserves the founding fathers creativity and craftsmanship in its museums and annual festivals. The Moravian history of 250 years is also alive and well in this city. Once known as the Wachovia Tract, German-speaking immigrants who only intended it to be a temporary settlement first settled the area. However, the area continued to prosper long after the farming communities developed and is still evident today in the Historic Bethabara Park. Visit the strangest house in the world at Korner's Folly. This structure is 100 feet high with 22 rooms on three floors. There are no two doors or windows alike in this house, it also contains a theater that the Korner children used and 20 unique fireplaces, all of different designs. Old Salem is a true delight to any history buff. This is one of the best preserved colonial sites in the country. In this living museum, guides dressed in period costumes conduct the regular daily activities and trades that were common in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Explore the history of decorative art at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Art, see the early works of art by colonial artists at the Reynolda House and the Southern Center for Contemporary Art has many exhibits in its cascading galleries.
With the many parks in the city, there is ample opportunity to sit on park benches and take in the beauty of nature. Fish from the benches at the C.G. Hill Memorial Park or stroll the scenic rolling hills of the Horizons Park. Explore the mysteries of science at Sci Works with its nature trails and hands-on exhibits. Visit the wineries in the area and taste the wines that have won many national and international awards.
If you prefer outdoor activities, Winston-Salem can satisfy any need from golf to fishing and ice skating. There are three main shopping districts for the avid shopper to enjoy. The Arts District is home to an eclectic array of art galleries and craft stores, while Hanes Mall has all the modern stores where you can purchase just about anything. Stroll through Reynolda Village and browse the selections in the quaint stores that line the street. All the buildings here were recreated from the estate of R. J. Reynolds and hold a lot of history along with fine shopping.
