Visit the mining town of Butte, Montana, one of the largest and most notorious copper mining towns of the Old West. Today it is the home of the Berkeley Pit and the largest Superfund site in the country. The city contains many of the old historic homes dating back to its heyday. The World Museum of Mining will give you a glimpse of what Butte was once like. This 1899 mining camp covers twelve acres and contains more than thirty structures. Train rides are available to take you around if you would prefer not to walk. The Granite Mountain Mine Memorial is a memorial erected to the 117 men killed in a mine disaster here in 1917.
When you are in this city of about 39,000 residents you can't miss an opportunity to see Our Lady of the Rockies, a giant 90-foot statue on top of the Continental Divide, 8500 feet above sea level.
