Started with only 15 residents, Independence, Iowa, now has a population of just over 6,000 people. The Super 8 motel is the only hotel in town, but there are 2 bed and breakfast establishments - the Riverside Bed and Breakfast with panoramic views of the Wapsipinicon River located quite close to all attractions and the Big Yellow House Bed and Breakfast, decorated in a presidential theme. Dine at the A & W Restaurant, which features great burgers, chicken and breakfast menus. The list of places to dine is quite extensive and you will certainly find scrumptious delights on the menus. Steak, seafood and exotic cuisine is available to satisfy all taste buds.
Visit Cedar Rock - the Water House, built by Frank Lloyd Wright, an innovator when it came to architectural design. Independence is located at the edge of Amish Country, so you are sure to be able to purchase some of the famous Amish quilts and see these people at work on their farms.
The Train Depot is a popular tourist attraction. Built in 1859, this building has been restored and contains an old-fashioned locomotive, a cargo car and caboose. Along the Wapsipinicon River that flows through the town, you will find the River Walk Parks area. This area has a walking trail, an amphitheater and a sand volleyball court. This is the setting for the Independence Day celebration held on July 4th.
The Feed Mill is on the registry of historic buildings and even though it has undergone extensive renovations, it is still in its original location. This five-story structure was once the center of the community for processing wheat into flour. It is open for tours during the summer season. Racers and fans flock to the Independence Motor Speedway, which is a 3/8 mile dirt track for IMCA race cars.
