Port Wentworth - Georgia - United States. Guide & Hotel Reservations from Cheap Hotels
Located just outside of Savannah, Georgia, Port Wentworth is a small town of about 3,200 people. It is the birthplace of cotton gin, which was invented by Eli Whitney in 1793. The city itself is located off of Exit 109 on Interstate I-95 and is located in Chatham County. Port Wentworth is in the process of redefining itself and developing itself into a real community, rather than just being known for having strip malls and subdivisions.Â
Though the town is small, there is still plenty to see and do all over its total area of 28 square miles. For instance, you can visit one of the most beautifully renovated lighthouses in North America at Tybee Island. Open everyday of the week from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, except for Tuesdays, the Tybee Island Light Station is a fantastic place to take in some of the sights and sounds of the area. You will also be educated on its history. The lighthouse has been guiding mariners into the Savannah River for over 270 years. It was actually one of the first public structures in all of Georgia.Â
While in and around Port Wentworth, you may want to take a little side trip and visit the Savannah History Museum. Just a short drive from Port Wentworth, the museum is home to more than 10,000 artifacts that showcase the city's history. Once inside the museum, you can visit exhibits ranging from how women's fashion has changed from the 19th and 20th centuries, to exhibits about the Revolutionary War Battle of Savannah. The museum is also home to the bench used in the movie Forrest Gump and items that have were a part of Savannah's railway history.Â
Take in the sights of Port Wentworth and its surrounding areas and you are sure to be enriched.Â
