Partway between Atlanta and Chattanooga, you will come across, Calhoun, Georgia, a small town of 7000 residents. Once known as Oothcalooga - the place of the beaver dams - the name was changed to Calhoun in honor of John C. Calhoun. Although the town is small, it does have many attractions and is the perfect place to use as a base from which you can explore New Echota.
Golfing is not a problem because you can tee off at either the Fields Ferry Golf Course or the Calhoun Elks Lodge Golf Course. The Fields Ferry golf course, designed by Arthur Davis, is a true par 72 championship course with 18 holes. It boasts a chipping green, driving range, a putting green and a pro shop. The Calhoun Elks Lodge Golf Course is a beautifully manicured 18 hole, par 71 course that also features a swimming pool and tennis courts for a truly family fun day.
Historians love to visit the New Echota State Historic site, which contains many original and reconstructed buildings that offer a glimpse into the Cherokee way of life as it was before they moved west on the "Trail of Tears". General Sherman's headquarters during the Civil War is now known as Oakleigh and houses many artifacts that will take you back to this period of history. It also houses a collection of over 1500 dolls. The Harris Art Center is a must on the itinerary of any visitor with an interest in the arts. This gallery features works by local artists and is also home to a theater where you may catch a live performance.
The children will love a visit to the Salacoa Creek Park with its zoo and farm animals. You can also enjoy a day or outdoor activities that include having a picnic or taking advantage of the 125 acre lake where you can go swimming, boating or fishing.
