Americus - Georgia - United States. Guide & Hotel Reservations from Cheap Hotels
Americus, established in 1832 and located in the heart of Sumter County in Georgia, was the site of three hospitals for Civil War Confederate soldiers. It was once one of the largest cities in the state and one of the first to make use of electric street cars. Some discrepancy exists with respect to the pioneer settlement as some say the town was founded by exuberant "merry cusses" while others maintain that the city was named after the explorer Amerigo Vespucci. Regardless, the city is representative of pioneer spirit.
Among the landmarks in Americus are the Windsor Hotel and Rylander Theatre. The hotel, referred to as Georgia's Victorian Secret, was first opened in 1892, restored to its initial splendor in 1991, and reopened. On the main floor is the Americus/ Sumter Welcome Center, which is full to capacity with history and information about the area. The golden oak and marble accents inside add to the exquisiteness of the hotel and make it a fine place to stay for an evening.
The Rylander Theatre, previously closed for a period of 40 years, has recently been refurbished and reopened. This process has been one of the most astonishing renovations in the history of the country. The theatre, surrounded with the charm and mystique of an early 1900's vaudeville theatre, has all the modern amenities to support a variety of presentations and performances and cater to a large audience. Complementing these two features, the entirety of the downtown neighborhood is plastered with elements of Victorian architecture adding to the brilliance of the city
