Described as a charming town by Southern Living Magazine, Lake Placid, Florida is proud of its small town atmosphere. This area in the Highlands County was originally home to the Seminole Indians and with the arrival of the railroad, Lake Placid was at one time the largest town in the country. This town is also known as the caladium capital of the world with the acres of these plants that are grown commercially here.

Your first view of Lake Placid will be the Placid Tower, a man-made landmark reaching 270 feet into the air. Climbing the tower will afford you an astounding view of the lakes and fields of citrus and caladiums. The Highlands Hammock State Park features great refuge for the animals among its 9000 acres of centuries old trees and plants. Take a guided tour to the remote areas and see the many different species that call this park home. The Historical Museum features many relics of the past, such as a pump organ, clothing and many other artefact's.
With 27 freshwater lakes, there is no lack of opportunity to engage in fishing, swimming or water sports. The Lake June Scrub State Park offers miles of shoreline and picnicking facilities as well as the perfect location for birdwatching. Stroll through the streets of Lake Placid to see the 37 murals that grace the buildings of the town depicting the local history.
