Delaware is commonly known as “The First State” or the “Blue Hen State” and has always made history, be it for being known as “The First State” or for introducing the first ever female Governor in the United States, “Ruth Ann Minner”.
Its long coast creates a splendid place for all kinds of water sports. It is the second smallest state in the US and has a well developed transportation network, hence it is easy to visit all the big cities in just one trip. If you’re coming from New Jersey you’ll cross a favorite landmark, the famous Delaware Memorial Bridge, the world’s largest twin span suspension bridge.
Rehoboth Beach is a good first stop. The beach is packed with entertainment ranging from different water sports to kite flying. You can enjoy fishing, surfing, biking, water parks and sailing. The beach is lively all year around, especially when there are bandstand concerts. It is host to many fun events such as the world famous “Punkin Chunkin” contest, “Sea Witch Halloween Festival and Fiddler’s convention”. The 4th of July too is celebrated with fervor.
Georgetown should be your second stop. It is just about a half hour drive from Rehoboth beach. This city is laded with history which can be studied at any one of the museums here. Along with entertaining yourself at the museums, you can relax your evenings away by wining and dining at the restaurants with world class cuisines.
Milford ought to be the next stop since it is about 25 minutes from Georgetown. It is a beautiful city with a fair amount of population. The “Milford skating center” and parks are a must visit. Shopping in the city is lots of fun since there are tons of malls. You might be lucky to find yourself in the midst of a sale. The city is fun to visit in winter since it is filled with recreational activities.
Moving on, you can hit Dover which is a 30 minute drive. Being the capital, Dover is filled with history and exciting places to visit. You have the parks, zoos and museums here. The “Air Mobility Command Museum” is an exciting place to visit. And of course the shopping at the “Spencer Bazaar” is loads of fun, everything you need can be found right here.
Now, head out, straight to New Castle which should take you less than an hour by car. This city was formerly a trade center and now bursts with life. Like most other cities in Delaware, this one too has a lot of history. Mike’s famous “Harley Davidson Museum” can be found in this city.
Since you are at New Castle, Newark would be a good place to visit next. The drive should take you under half hour. It is believed that Betsy Ross’s flag, the stars and stripes first flew here! “Cooch’s bridge” is also worth a visit for its historical value. “Iron Hill Park” and “White Clay Creek State Park” is a must visit with its biking and hiking trails.
Lastly, a stop at Wilmington is necessary; the drive should take approximately 25 minutes. It is a medium sized city that looks beautiful. It was in Wilmington city that the “first Christmas seal” was sold. “Grand Opera House” is another must visit. You can also indulge yourself in many water activities.
