Although Burton on Trent is the official name of this large town in East Staffordshire, it is commonly just called Burton. It straddles both sides of the River Trent and originally developed around the monastery of St. Modwin. This town is famous for its breweries and is home to two of the most well-known beers in the world - Coors and Marstons. Because of the many breweries in the town, there is a distinctive smell in the air.
The history of Burton dates back many centuries and it was the site of the first woollen industry in the country when the monks started the wool industries, which led to its development throughout the rest of Britain. Visit the Washlands, where the low-lying meadows are susceptible to flooding from the river. The water from this river is important in the brewing industry and because the use of chemicals and insecticides are forbidden, the water helps to keep the grounds lush and green. There are also three bridges from which you can get an excellent view of the river and the footbridge connects the town to the park on Andresey Island.
