With a history that dates back to Saxon times, Hinckley is a town in Leicestershire county where history is alive and well. The town has a population of about 50,000, but this also includes the neighboring villages of Earl Shifton, Barwell and Burbage. At the time of the Domesday Book, this was quite a large and thriving settlement. A market was established here in 1311. It was the site of battles during the Civil War and changed hands several times. During its long and varied history, it has been a center for manufacturing hosiery and for brewing ale.

See the Great Meeting of 1722 to get a glimpse of non-conformist architecture. Along the way you will see some of the hosiery factories that were once so important to the economy of this area. The Ashby Canal, one of the longest in the country, passes through this town and you do have to visit the medieval church in Stoke Golding to see the 13th century windows and the exquisite carvings on the arcade.
