Hemel Hempstead, England Guide & Hotel Reservations from Cheap Hotels Worldwide
Even though Hemel Hempstead has developed as a town since the Second World War, it has been settled since the 700's. It is part of the Hertfordshire County and has a population of just over 80,000. It is nestled in a valley at the point where the Cade and Bulbourne Rivers meet. The main railway line from London passes through here and it has links to several major motorways. It is believed that the name of the town originates from the word homestead and it was listed in the Domesday Book as Hamelamesede.
Visit the Church of St. Mary's, which dates back to the 12th century. It is one of the finest Norman churches in the country and the tall spire is the tallest in Europe. The original part of town is called the "Old Town" and contains many buildings and houses that have withstood the test of time. In Piccotts End there are cottages with Tudor wall paintings and it is believed that there is a link between these paintings and the heretical beliefs of France and Northern Italy of that time.
Just a few kilometers away, you can visit Gorhambury House, which was built in the late 1700's. Sir Francis Bacon owned this house at one time and it still contains notable family portraits of the Viscount Grimston family. Take a tour of this mansion as well as a tour of the grounds. The Verulamium Museum has something of interest for all ages. There is also a country park here, a children's playground and the opportunity to play crazy golf.
When you visit Hemel Hempstead, you can enjoy a wide range of activities. Indoor bowling, ice skating, golfing and cricket are some of the activities that you can have on your itinerary. With the wealth of accommodations and places to eat, everything here is designed with your comfort in mind. Shop at the Marlowe's Center where there is a fine selection of stores.
