Grenada is a mountainous island, covered with fragrant spice trees and rare tropical flowers. It is surrounded by beaches and small towns. This island has sources of our everyday spices such as nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and cocoa. This is known as a volcanic island with rivers, waterfalls, rainforests and mountain lakes. There are many docks and warehouses as well as shops and homes surrounding this horse shoe island. There are many festivals, fairs and markets on the island, much a celebration type of island. Black and white sand beaches are all around the island, the two mile curve around the bay is a breathtaking experience. Although the tourism industry is still relatively small in scale compared to many of the Caribbean islands, Grenada is a great getaway for those wanting to be secluded from the main resort vacations the Caribbean has to offer.
This road cuts across the mountainous centre of the island through the Grand Etang Forest Reserve. On this journey you will pass waterfalls and hiking trails. Along the road it is covered with ferns, bamboo, heliconia and buttressed kapok trees, this is truly a rainforest adventure. The most beautiful attractions is Annandale falls, this is a 30ft waterfall in a vegetation with a pool beneath the falls that's deep enough for swimming. Another beautiful place is the Grand Estang National Park, with many views of the western coast you can hike the hills and relax by the lake.
Grand Anse, Grenada's main resort area, is a long stretch of white sand surrounded by turquoise blue water and hills. There are many vendors along this beach that sell t-shirts, spice and spice baskets. For peace and quiet, cross the peninsula of Quarantine Point to the U-shaped bay at Morne Rouge. There is a boat that connects the two beaches.
The largest town on Grenada's northern coast is French for the word 'jump.' This is the site where in 1651 retreating families leapt to their deaths to avoid from having to surrender to the French soldiers which were quickly approaching. Here lie 130ft high coastal cliffs, looking down you can see the fishing boats and the village beach. Many come to see the brilliant eroded rock formations and the nearby islands.
