1. Get a 'Roma pass' as soon as you arrive in the airport!!!!(it is for 3 days free travel and cut price entrance fees)
2. Send a postcard from Vatican City - Rome is notorious for lost letters (plus you get a vatican city stamp!)
3. All trains and metro close quite early so make sure you know what buses you can get before you leave the hotel
4. Do not get a guided tour! they are boring and it is better to find out a little before you leave, print it out from the internet or buy a good guide book. Guided tours are like herding cattle through the market place - you will thank me when you overhear the nonsence they are spouting when you pass the many tour groups.
For example, I overheard this outside the Vatican "it is a big door as you can see, it is old too and it is really heavy"-ok the tour guide had a nice italian accent, but, I could have told you that for free!!!!! ha ha! have fun and enjoy this beautiful city!
